Can I get swallow studies at Elder Care?

We will coordinate with you to schedule an exam at our facility via a third party mobile modified barium swallow unit. The results of your MBS  exam will be provided directly to our skilled Speech-Language Pathologist to inform your speech therapy services at Elder Care. Modified barium swallow exams require a doctor’s script.

Please contact Elder Care’s Speech Therapy Department at 918-766-0391 or email Abby Petermann at apetermann@abouteldercare.org to schedule an appointment.

What is I need to do to get Speech Therapy?

Although it depends on your insurance, many times an Speech-Language Pathologist needs a doctor’s script to evaluate and provide speech therapy services to patients. At Elder Care, we require these referrals for all patients to ensure excellent documentation.

Choose Excellence, Choose Elder Care.

What can I expect from my sessions?

Depending on the reason for your referral, your initial evaluation will take anywhere from 1-3 hours. We will do our best to communicate your particular evaluation expectations when we call to schedule your evaluation with you. The evaluation will consist of a detailed interview with you and, if needed, your caregivers/loved ones, as well as standardized assessment measures and/or clinical assessment of your area(s) of need. Prior to leaving your evaluation, our skilled Speech-Language Pathologist will provide you with preliminary results, including diagnosis information, prognosis, and a basic intervention plan.

Following your evaluation, appointments will be set up based on your individual needs; 1-2 times each week is typical. Each appointment lasts 45-60 minutes. You will also be provided with home activities and suggestions throughout your treatment period. The length of your treatment period will be determined by your individual needs.

SPEAK OUT! participants will generally have 3 appointments each week for 4 weeks with an intensive home exercise program.

How do I set up an appointment?

To set up an appointment for a comprehensive evaluation, please call 918-766-0391 or email our Speech-Language Pathologist, Abby Petermann, at apetermann@abouteldercare.org

Prior to your evaluation, we will verify your insurance and gather some pertinent health information.

SPEAK OUT,  which  typically  consists  of twelve individual speech  therapy sessions, is specifically designed to help Parkinson’s patients. Together, the  patient and speech language pathologist complete speech, voice, and cognitive exercises using a specialized workbook  that Parkinson Voice Project provides to every SPEAK OUT!®  patient in the U.S.

The program emphasizes speaking with intent and converts speech from an automatic function to an intentional act. Upon completion of SPEAK OUT!® , patients transition to The LOUD Crowd® .

The LOUD Crowd®

Due to the progressive nature of Parkinson’s, daily  home  practice  and ongoing follow-up is necessary. The LOUD Crowd® consists of weekly group sessions on Mondays at 11:00am where SPEAK OUT!® exercises are performed and participants practice speaking with intent. The LOUD Crowd® provides accountability, camaraderie, education, and support. Click here to learn more.
